Do’s & Don’ts for a good career…

Posted October 27, 2011

I have seen many people who have secured very good percentage in their educational exams, got a fancy job at a multi-national company and then few years later their career just tanked! And, that’s because a career isn’t built only by a fancy degree or the first job. I would like to make here some points that could ruin your career:

Changing jobs for money alone
It’s more important to look for work you enjoy and which helps you to grow. Good money does not guarantee a good job. It’s very necessary that you should be passionate about your work.

Jumping careers too often
While it’s obvious to want to move to a better or more satisfying job but changing jobs too often may be perceived as indecisive and unstable.

Accepting status quo
There is no harm in trying your best. If you feel your current job is not adding value to you, talk to your boss before it causes anxiety, frustration and even depression.

Working without a long-term career strategy
A long-term plan will give you a clearer idea about what kind of jobs you should seek and which organisations will benefit you most.  But if you go with the flow for too long, it can get you lost and may lead to frustration.

Working due to some pressure
If you work that is not compatible with your aptitude, it will downgrade your work quality as well as your mental and physical health. So, don’t let your parents or friends influence your career decisions, especially if you are uncertain of what you want to do. If needed, seek a professional’s help like a career counsellor.

Short / No notice before quitting
Serving the notice period always help to both the parties. It gives your employer enough time to find a replacement without upsetting work whereas it will keep your boss happy, who will give a good testimonial when a future employer calls.

Not Networking
Try to develop a better work reference for yourself by meeting new people and making new friends. You don’t know when you will need these contacts and who will help you!
