Optimum Backup and Maintenance Plan

Hi Sujeet,

                 I am looking for some information on an optimum backup / maintenance plan to be followed in a small to mid-sized organization. Also explain when this to be scheduled and how to apply this on multiple SQL Servers. If you can also let me know what each step of the maintenance plan does, it will greatly help to understand their impact and why the steps are being used in the maintenance plan.
